Pound Redivivus

Parallels between American writers Ezra Pound and Gore Vidal are not hard to find. Both men, for example, fled the uncouth barbarians of their native land to live in Italy. Both broadcast treasonous statements on the radio, Pound in defense of Mussolini during World War II, Vidal in defense of Saddam Hussein during the war to liberate Iraq. Pound was confined for many years to a mental hospital, and Vidal should be -- I heard him on the BBC earlier this week claiming that the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein was "innocent." In the immortal words of a former United States vice president, "What a terrible thing to have lost one's mind. Or not to have a mind at all. How true that is."
