When a friend complained to Linnaeus that Sweden did not afford scope enough for the successful study of nature, the great naturalist laid his hand on a bit of the moss on which they were reclining, and said, "Under this palm is material for the study of a lifetime."This is the earliest source I can find for this oft-repeated anecdote, but there must be an earlier one, probably in a foreign language.
