Homage to the Dead

Libanius, Orations 18.3 (tr. A.F. Norman):
Yet with regard to the dead, there is but one recourse for us—the praise and narration that transmit their glorious achievements to all posterity.

πρὸς δὲ τοὺς οἰχομένους ἓν ἡμῖν ὑπάρχει μόνον, εὐφημίαι τε καὶ λόγοι τὰ πεπραγμένα μετ᾿ ἀρετῆς εἰς ἅπαντα παραπέμποντες τὸν χρόνον.
