The historian Joachim Fest observed, "Was sich kritische Geschichte nennt, offenbart häufig weniger Kraft zur Unterscheidung, als zur Verdammung, und kein Respekt vor dem Stummsein der Toten macht den Anklägern die Schuldsprüche schwer."
