Holidays

But later, because of their prosperity, luxury prevailed to such an extent that the public festivals celebrated among them every year were more in number than the days of the year...Plato, Laws 2.653d (tr. T.J. Saunders):
ἐξίσχυσε δ᾽ ἡ ὕστερον τρυφὴ διὰ τὴν εὐδαιμονίαν, ὥστε τὰς πανδήμους ἑορτὰς πλείους ἄγεσθαι κατ᾽ ἔτος παρ᾽ αὐτοῖς ἢ τὰς ἡμέρας...
The gods, however, took pity on the human race, born to suffer as it was, and gave it relief in the form of religious festivals to serve as periods of rest from its labours.
