In a recent essay Theodore Dalrymple quoted Henry de Montherlant (1895-1972) as follows:

Au fond, la plupart des gens ne lisent pas; ou, s'ils lisent, ils ne comprennent pas; quant à ceux qui comprennent, ils oublient.I don't know in what work by Montherlant this occurs. I confess I've never read any of his books.
