Strong Agathon, who died for Abdera, was mourned at his pyre by the whole of the city; for Ares, who loves blood, never in the eddy of hateful battle slew such a young man as he was.
Ἀβδήρων προθανόντα τὸν αἰνοβίην Ἀγάθωνα
πᾶσ᾿ ἐπὶ πυρκαϊῆς ἥδ᾿ ἐβόησε πόλις·
οὔ τινα γὰρ τοιόνδε νέων ὁ φιλαίματος Ἄρης
ἠνάρισε στυγερῆς ἐν στροφάλιγγι μάχης.
