If you will observe the way in which men act, you will see that all those who attain great riches and great power have attained them by means of either fraud or force; those things, then, that they have snatched with trickery or with violence, in order to conceal the ugliness of their acquisition, under the false title of profit they make honorable. But those who, through either lack of prudence or great folly, avoid these ways, always are smothered in servitude and poverty, for faithful servants are always servants, and good men are always poor; none come out of servitude except the unfaithful and the bold, and out of poverty except the rapacious and fraudulent. God and Nature have put all men's fortunes in their midst, and these fortunes are more open to stealing than to labor, and to bad rather than good arts. From this it comes that men devour one another; and they who are weakest always come off worst. We ought, then, to use force when we get a chance.

Ma se voi noterete il modo del procedere degli uomini, vedrete tutti quelli che a ricchezze grandi e a grande potenza pervengono o con frode o con forza esservi pervenuti; e quelle cose, di poi, ch'eglino hanno o con inganno o con violenza usurpate, per celare la bruttezza dello acquisto, quello sotto falso titolo di guadagno adonestano. E quelli i quali, o per poca prudenza o per troppa sciocchezza, fuggono questi modi, nella servitù sempre e nella povertà affogono; perché i fedeli servi sempre sono servi, e gli uomini buoni sempre sono poveri; né mai escono di servitù se non gli infedeli e audaci, e di povertà se non i rapaci e frodolenti. Perché Iddio e la natura ha posto tutte le fortune degli uomini loro in mezzo; le quali più alle rapine che alla industria, e alle cattive che alle buone arti sono esposte: di qui nasce che gli uomini mangiono l'uno l'altro, e vanne sempre col peggio chi può meno. Debbesi adunque usare la forza quando ce ne è data occasione.
