The Athenians, first among the Greek fighters at Marathon,ἐστόρεσαν: see Liddell-Scott-Jones (9th ed., p. 1650), s.v. στόρνυμι, sense 2b: level, lay low. The word is cognate with Latin sterno, English strew.
laid low the might of the Medes in their golden apparel.
Ἑλλήνων προμαχοῦντες Ἀθηναῖοι Μαραθῶνι
χρυσοφόρων Μήδων ἐστόρεσαν δύναμιν.
