Oh, unhappy hour when strange things
came into this quiet and happy valley
to destroy the innocent simplicity of our lives!
The new is forcing its way in with (all its) might (while) the old
(and) the worthy are departing. Other times are coming.
There (now) lives a generation of different mind.
What am I doing here? They are all buried (in their graves) —
those with whom I labored and lived.
My generation is already lying beneath the earth.
Happy is he who no longer needs to live with the new!
