Two Types of Suffering

Ovid, Heroides 5.7-8 (tr. Grant Showerman):
Softly must we hear whatever suffering is our desert;
the penalty that comes without deserving brings us dole.

leniter, ex merito quidquid patiare, ferendum est;
    quae venit indigno poena dolenda venit.
