In the advertisement to the second edition of Lewis's Translation of Juvenal I read that 'George Long somewhere says that the greatest scholar in Europe will occasionally be guilty of mistakes, which a schoolboy will be able to point out'. This is a saying of great comfort to a primesautier nature such as mine is, and when I think of the additions I myself have made to what Flaubert calls 'Le dossier de la bĂȘtise humaine' I overflow with charity toward all my fellow-blunderers.
