An Empty Bag

Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanack (New York: The Century Co., 1902), p. 99 (from the 1740 Almanack):
An empty bag cannot stand upright.
Cloth or leather bags—modern paper bags with their flat bases can stand upright when empty.
