Shame

Homer, Odyssey 17.347 (tr. A.T. Murray):
Shame is no good comrade for a man that is in need.

αἰδὼς δ᾽ οὐκ ἀγαθὴ κεχρημένῳ ἀνδρὶ παρεῖναι.
Hesiod, Works and Days 317-319 (tr. Hugh G. Evelyn-White):
An evil shame is the needy man's companion,
shame which both greatly harms and prospers men:
shame is with poverty, but confidence with wealth.

αἰδὼς δ᾽ οὐκ ἀγαθὴ κεχρημένον ἄνδρα κομίζει,
αἰδώς, ἥ τ᾽ ἄνδρας μέγα σίνεται ἠδ᾽ ὀνίνησιν.
