Why?
Callimachus, Iambics 9 = fragment 199 Pfeiffer (tr. C.A. Trypanis):
Newer› ‹Older
Long-bearded Hermes, why is your penis (pointing ?) to your beard and not to your feet ... ?I would translate (taking ποττὰν as an adjective modifying ὑπήναν and adopting Maas' supplement βλέπει as the main verb):
Ἑρμᾶ, τί τοι τὸ νεῦρον, ὦ Γενειόλα,
ποττὰν ὑπήναν κοὐ ποτ᾿ ἴχνι[ον;
in fine fort. βλέπει Maas
Bearded Hermes, why does your penis look towards your long beard and not towards your feet?Pan Painter, red-figure krater (480-460 BC), side A (Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Antikensammlungen, inv.
