As for Lamartine, for him Rabelais was "a poisonous, fetid mushroom born in the dunghill of the medieval cloister, the defrocked monks' pig who regaled himself in his dirty sty and loved to spatter his dregs on the face, manners, and language of his age."116I've never had the patience to read anything by Lamartine, but I never get tired of Rabelais.
