Dating of Building Materials

Paul MacKendrick, The Mute Stones Speak: The Story of Archaeology in Italy, 2nd ed. (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1983), p. 393:
Miss [Esther Boise] Van Deman was famous for her precise dating of building materials; she was the only archaeologist in Rome who could date a brick by the taste of the mortar.
There doesn't seem to be an entry for Van Deman (1862-1937) in the Database of Classical Scholars. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1898 with a dissertation on Vesta Populi Romani Quiritium and the Vestal Virgins.
