Old Tales

Donald Davidson (1893-1968), "Hermitage," Poems 1922-1961 (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1966), pp. 68-73 (at 73):
These old tales are like prayers. I only know
This is the secret refuge of our race
Told only from a father to his son,
A trust laid on your lips, as though a vow
To generations past and yet to come.
