Half a Man

Homer, Odyssey 17.322-323 (tr. A.T. Murray):
For Zeus, whose voice is borne afar, takes away half his worth
from a man, when the day of slavery comes upon him.

ἥμισυ γάρ τ᾽ ἀρετῆς ἀποαίνυται εὐρύοπα Ζεὺς
ἀνέρος, εὖτ᾽ ἄν μιν κατὰ δούλιον ἦμαρ ἕλῃσιν.
