William Vallicella, the Maverick Philosopher, has been publishing some good aphorisms, e.g.
Newer› ‹Older
- Ataraxia: "One way to retain peace of mind is by refraining from giving others a piece of one's mind."
- The Leap of Despair: "Despair requires as much of a leap as faith does. In either case we jump beyond what we can strictly know."
- The Recluse Aphorizes, Laconically: "By oneself one can be oneself."
- Vive l'Inégalité
- Profumo After the Affair
- British Freedom and Muslim Discipline, sample: "Discipline without freedom leads to misery, but freedom without discipline leads to chaos, shallowness, and misery of another kind."
- Red Ken, the Odious
- Why New Vaccines are Scarce, sample: "In the modern world, when tragedy strikes, can tort be far behind?"
Autobiography, be the blog anonymous or ... onymous, which does not bear on professional matters and activities, should be avoided. But the autobiographical bits, those of the Sauvage included when he breaks his own rule, are some of the most enjoyable parts of academic blogs. For example, Horace Jeffery Hodges at Gypsy Scholar, in addition to scholarly posts like this one, has been publishing a delightful series of boyhood memories:It's almost like a serialized Dickens novel. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
