Sçavant Ne Puis, Chercheur Je Suis
Anent A Scholar Manqué, Ian Jackson drew my attention to a bookplate of Jules Réaux, shown on p. 214 of Germaine Meyer-Noirel, L'ex-libris: histoire, art, techniques (Paris: Picard, 1989). Unfortunately, the only image of this bookplate I can find on the World Wide Web is clipped at the bottom:
The motto reads "SCAVANT NE PVIS | CHERCHEVR IE SVIS," i.e. Sçavant ne puis, chercheur je suis," in English something like, "As I cannot be a scholar, I am a collector." An alternate phrasing, on other bookplates, is "Sçavant ne puis, curieux suis."
