By Oneself

A poem by Ryōkan (1758-1831), tr. Ryūichi Abé and Peter Haskel:
It's not that I don't care
To mingle with others
Only that I'm better
At amusing myself
The same, tr. Misao Kodama and Hikosaku Yanagishima:
I am not escaping from the world,
But what I like best is
To enjoy myself alone
Without mingling in the crowd.
Romanization:
yononaka ni majiranu to niwa aranedomo
    hitoriasobi zo ware wa masareru
