Saved by Horace: Update
Thanks to Andrew Rickard for help in tracking down the edition (Paris: Didot, 1800) and current location (Milan, Biblioteca Comunale, Fondo Stendhaliano Bucci, 0134-01) of the volume of Horace which saved Stendhal. These photographs show the inscription in Stendhal's handwriting and the hole made by the sword or bayonet:
The book is bound together with a copy of Vergil.
