Freedom

Euripides, fragment 275 (tr. Christopher Collard and Martin Cropp):
A miserable death to all those who are happy with monarchy, or with the tyranny of a few in their city! The title 'free' is worth everything; (with this) even a man who has little is reckoned to have much.

κακῶς δ᾿ ὄλοιντο πάντες οἳ μοναρχίᾳ
χαίρουσιν ὀλίγων τ᾿ ἐν πόλει τυραννίδι.
τοὐλεύθερον γὰρ ὄνομα παντὸς ἄξιον·
κἂν σμίκρ᾿ ἔχῃ τις, μεγάλ᾿ ἔχειν νομίζεται.
