These ancients are always the ones we return to when it is a matter of the art of living, whose secret two thousand years of supernature and convulsive charity have stolen from us. We return to them, to their poise and their amenity, provided we are free of that frenzy Christianity has inculcated in us; the curiosity they waken corresponds to a lowering of our fever, a retreat toward health.
Ces anciens, nous revenons toujours à eux dès qu'il s'agit de l'art de vivre dont deux mille ans de surnature et de charité convulsive nous ont fait perdre le secret. Nous revenons à eux, à leur pondération et à leur aménité, pour peu que tombe cette frénésie que nous a inculquée le christianisme; la curiosité qu'ils éveillent en nous correspond à une diminution de notre fièvre, à un recul vers la santé.
