May no other new pursuit arise for me
in place of excellence and learning, but ever holding on to this
may I enjoy lyre, dance, and song,
and may I have noble thoughts in company with the noble.
μήποτέ μοι μελέδημα νεώτερον ἄλλο φανείη
ἀντ᾿ ἀρετῆς σοφίης τ᾿, ἀλλὰ τόδ᾿ αἰὲν ἔχων 790
τερποίμην φόρμιγγι καὶ ὀρχηθμῷ καὶ ἀοιδῇ,
