Here's what Nietzsche said about compassion, in Human, All Too Human § 499 (tr. R.J. Hollingdale):
Friend.— Fellow rejoicing [Mitfreude], not fellow suffering [Mitleiden], makes the friend.

Freund.— Mitfreude, nicht Mitleiden, macht den Freund.
