Exceptionalism

Vladimir V. Putin, in the New York Times (September 11, 2013):
It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation.
Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), Zibaldone, tr. Kathleen Baldwin et al. (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2013), p. 395 (Z 823):
Equally, there is no people so barbarous that it does not implicitly believe itself to be better, more perfect, and superior to any other, and judge itself to be a model for the nations.

Parimente non v’è popolo sì barbaro che non si creda implicitamente migliore, più perfetto, superiore a qualunque altro, e non si stimi il modello delle nazioni.
