I had travelled over Europe; seen and conversed with some of the greatest scholars of the age; written flaming historical and critical articles in Quarterly and Monthly Reviews; and had to sit down in a sort of intellectual Botany Bay, and teach raw country lads and little boys escaped from school to blunder through Latin sentences, in the human meaning and purport of which they seemed incapable of taking any interest!
