According to Platina (an understandably hostile witness), Paul II 'had such a hatred and contempt for humanistic studies that he applied the collective label of "Heretics" to those who followed that course' (Humanitatis...studia ita oderat & contemnabat: ut eius studiosos uno nomine hæreticos appellaret).
