Highly Offensive and Insulting

Roy Porter (1946-2002), English Society in the Eighteenth Century (London: Penguin Books, 1990), pp. 48-49:
Extreme distinctions in wealth were sometimes sealed by attitudes which almost denied that rich and poor came from the same species. Thus the Duchess of Buckingham loathed Methodists because 'it is monstrous to be told that you have a heart as sinful as the common wretches that crawl on the earth. This is highly offensive and insulting and at variance with high rank and good breeding.'
