Oblivion

Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), The Bride of Messina, Act I, Scene 3, lines 283-287 (tr. Hermann J. Weigand):
Peoples pass on,
names fade away,
dark oblivion spreads its night-enfolding wings
over whole generations.

Völker verrauschen,
Namen verklingen,
Finstre Vergessenheit
Breitet die dunkelnachtenden Schwingen
Über ganzen Geschlechtern aus.
