The Basques have long regarded their language with veneration; they consider that it was the tongue spoken in the Garden of Eden, and that all Basques will go to heaven, for the simple reason that the devil cannot tempt them, as he has never been able to learn Basque; anyone who has glanced at the Basque verb will be inclined to sympathise with the devil's difficulties.
