The Fewer the Better

Stephen Greenblatt, The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2011), p. 236, with note on p. 304:
In France, a villager named Isambard was arrested for having exclaimed, when a friar announced after mass that he would say a few words about God, "The fewer the better."

236 "The fewer the better": Walter L. Wakefield, "Some Unorthodox Popular Ideas of the Thirteenth Century," in Medievalia et Humanistica, p. 28.
A fuller citation is Medievalia et Humanistica 4 (1973) 25-35 (at 28). The article is unavailable to me.
